The Robin Hood Theatre Company are to put on a production of an award winning comedy.

The Memory of Water will be onstage from April 29 to May 3, at the Robin Hood Theatre in Averham.

It tells the story of three sisters who gather in their old family home on the Yorkshire coast for their mother’s funeral.

The cast: Sam Kendall, Cate Martin, Rebecca Briggs-Price, and Faye Hemingway.

Practical Teresa, who lives nearby and runs a health supplements business with her husband, has organised everything; Dr Mary has come from London with her lover and some whisky; Catherine has left her fiance in Spain but brought some home grown weed with her.

They bicker, they argue, they get drunk and stoned and chaos ensues.

Somewhere in the middle of all this Mary keeps seeing her mother as she was thirty years ago — is she a ghost, an hallucination or a dream? As the three sisters come to grips with their mother’s recent death and the memories that evokes, not all of them true, along with the baggage that has built up over years, their stories are revealed but not necessarily how they each remembered events.

Shelagh Stephenson’s play is funny and poignant, and was winner of the Lawrence Olivier Award for best comedy in 2000.

With sharp observation of quirks of character and comic anguish the play promises to be mercurially funny and present an emotional roller-coaster ride.
