Dancers on learning curve are a class act
A comedy about a tap dancing class in a village hall is the latest production by the Newark-based Stroke Of Genius Community Theatre Company.
In Stepping Out by Richard Harris, most of the dancers have two left feet but tutor Mavis is determined to teach them how to dance, even if it kills her.
She enters them into a show and has to get them ready to perform, with hilarious results.
Along the way their lives are put into the spotlight and the audience finds out what motivated them to attend the class.
Director Carolyn Drury said: “We never seem to have a problem attracting talented local actors to work with the company.”
Carolyn is joined by Lisa Lee as choreographer. She also takes on the role of Maxine.
Flick Spear plays Sylvia, Kerri Saxby is Andy, Zanda Pepper is Dorothy, Anastasia is Lynne and Rebecca Ladds is Mavis.
They are joined by newcomers Imogen Phyllis as Vera, Maria Hodgkins as Rose, Nic Adams as the unfortunate Geoffrey, the only man in the tap class, and Janet Smith as grumpy pianist Mrs Frazer.
The show is at the Magnus School, Newark, from Wednesday to a week on Saturday at 7.30pm, including a Saturday matinée at 2.30pm.
