Horrible Histories ­— Barmy Britain drive-in production coming to Newark Showground




King Henry VIII, Guy Fawkes and Dick Turpin are heading to Newark Showground later this year in another outdoor production.

They are part of the cast of Horrible Histories ­— Barmy Britain, which is performed at the venue on Saturday, May 1, at 11am.

It follows the success of Horrible Christmas, a carpark pantomime that had three sell-out performances at the showground in December.

It is produced by the same company ­— Birmingham Stage Company, with Coalition Agency.

Horrible Histories ­— Barmy Britain features Queen Boudicca, King Henry VIII, Guy Fawkes, Dick Turpin, Queen Victoria and more historical characters from our barmy past.

Carpark Party says this fantastic show will entertain all ages with its hysterical historical journey through the barmiest bits of British history!

Horrible Histories Live On Stage is based on the best-selling books written by Terry Deary, illustrated by Martin Brown and published by Scholastic.

It first launched in 2005 with the world premieres of Terrible Tudors and Vile Victorians.

Since then, the Birmingham Stage Company has produced 18 Horrible shows, performing to more than three million people in the UK, including the longest running children’s show in West End history, with its record-breaking series Barmy Britain.

A drive-in performance of David Walliams’s Billionaire Boy will take place at Newark Showground on the same day after being rescheduled.

The show was due to be performed on April 6 ­— but has been moved to May 1 at 2pm and 5pm.

It has been moved following the release of the government’s roadmap out of coronavirus restrictions.

The production is also by award-winning Birmingham Stage Company and Coalition Agency,.

Billionaire Boy started life as a David Walliams novel for children in 2010, published by HarperCollins Children’s Books. In 2016 it was adapted into a BBC production.

It tells the story of Joe Spud, who is 12-years-old and the richest boy in the country.

He has his own sports car, £100k a week pocket money and two crocodiles as pets. But what Joe doesn’t have is a friend. So he decides to leave his posh school and start at the local comprehensive.

However, things don’t go as planned for Joe and life becomes a rollercoaster as he tries find the one thing money can’t buy.

Current covid-19 social distancing guidelines will be adhered to.

There will be a traffic management team on site and all vehicles will be parked two metres apart, and tickets will be scanned through the windows, so no human contact is necessary.

Toilet facilities will be provided with social distancing health and safety management and sanitisation measures in place.
