Review: White Christmas starring Jay McGuiness, Dan Burton and Lorna Luft, at Nottingham Theatre Royal
Everyone leaves the theatre dreaming of a white Christmas thanks to the classic musical at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal this week.
Newark’s own Jay McGuiness leads the cast as Bob Wallace in the stage version of the classic film, White Christmas, which runs until Saturday.
He has the unenviable job of taking on the role made famous by Bing Crosby, including the iconic solo White Christmas. Thankfully, he doesn’t try to copy the crooner and instead makes the role his own.
For those who don’t know, the story follows two former Army buddies-turned singing stars who find themselves in Vermont for Christmas trying to save the struggling inn business of their former General Henry Waverly — the excellent Michael Starke — while looking for love.
Wallace’s sidekick, Phil Davis, is played by Dan Burton and the two leading ladies are the wonderful Jessica Daley as Betty Haynes and Monique Young as Judy Haynes.
But this is a real ensemble production and the show would be nothing without the many dancers who perfectly perform the numerous big song and dance numbers.
Special mention must also go to scene-stealers Lorna Luft (Martha) Lucy Warway (Susan) and Steve Fortune as Ezekiel, a man of few words but great comedy.
The production is everything you would expect — classic songs, perfectly choreographed routines and great story. The only disappointment is the lack of genuine snow as you leave the theatre.
It is perfect feelgood show to leave you feeling festive. — SH
