The Sir Donald Wolfit Charitable Trust announces An Afternoon with Alex Jennings at Newark Palace Theatre as their main Autumn presentation




An honoured actor is to visit town — having starred in a number of notable roles.

The Sir Donald Wolfit Charitable Trust has announced its main presentation for the Autumn to coincide with the 123rd anniversary of the birth of Balderton-born actor Donald Wolfit on April 20.

Alex Jennings, who is best remembered for his role in the film The Lady in the Van opposite the late Maggie Smith, where he portrayed the writer Alan Bennett, will visit Newark Palace Theatre on Sunday, September 28.

He will be in conversation with former Nottingham Playhouse director Richard Digby Day in the show An Afternoon with Alex Jennings.

David Piper, current chairman of the Donald Wolfit Charitable Trust admits most people won’t instantly recognise his name but as soon as they see his face they remember the remarkable number of roles he has undertaken.

Alex Jennings more recently he appeared as Lord Arbuthnot in the highly acclaimed Mr Bates versus The Post Office, and his other significant roles include The Queen, The Crown and A Very English Scandal for television.

He was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2024 King’s Birthday honours list for his services to drama.

The Sir Donald Wolfit Charitable Trust formed 30 years ago in honour of the actor-manager.
