Businesses and properties on Farndon Road in Newark flooded as submerged road closed by Nottinghamshire County Council after River Trent and River Devon overflow following Storm Henk

A main road into Newark is now completely submerged — although traffic is still attempting to get through.

Farndon Road is flooded close to the bridge over the River Devon, and although road closure signage has been set up, vehicles are not heeding the warning.

Motorists have continued to drive through the deep flood water, which is so high it is covering tyres and lapping up against properties.

The road has been closed, but some traffic is still attempting to pass through.

The road has been listed as closed by Nottinghamshire County Council — who have issued a warning after video of people driving through flood water was published.

Looking on in disbelief was Carolyn Boswell, who said: “It’s ridiculous these cars coming through, a car’s going to break down.

“Now they’re driving on the pavements.

“It’s not fair on these poor home owners, they’re just washing the water up into their houses.

“There is a sign saying that the road is closed but I feel there should be someone down here dealing with this.”

Phil Nicholson, who has lived in Newark for 80 years, added: “I was born and raised in Newark and this is the first time I’ve ever seen this here.

“I’ve got a 4x4 but I wouldn’t risk going through this.”

Water levels have risen so much that the River Devon has burst its banks into Sconce and Devon Park and completely flooded Newark Marina up to the front gates.

One business on Fardon Road, which has been affected is Kirk and Bills.

Mathew Warriner works at the business, and said: “We flooded with 18 inches of water in our workshop this morning. We’ve been trying to pump it out and we’re down to about 14 inches now but there is just so much water.

“The last time anything like this happened was in the early 2000s.

“But this is worse than anything I’ve seen in my time here.”
