Newark Churches Together participate in Walk of Witness in Newark town centre on Good Friday
Priests and parishioners representing a dozen Newark Churches have come together to share the message of Easter.
The Walk of Witness is an annual procession through the town centre, where different Christian denominations unite to spread good will and prayer as one.
Taking place on Good Friday, the walk represented the same journey that Jesus made in the bible, carrying the cross upon which he would be crucified.
The event was attended by around 200 people who walked from London Road car park to Newark Market Place, where songs were sang, and prayers were said.
Dom O'Connell of the Assembly Church, said he was pleased to see so many people come together in the name of God.
“We are one church, one cross, one resurrection, one Jesus Christ,” he said.
“The message of the cross is for everyone and it is great that so many different churches were represented.
“Although we may disagree on how we practice, we put all of that aside and celebrate as one church.”
Whether they were Catholics, Protestants, Baptists, Methodists, Evangelical, or any other Christian denomination, they showed togetherness during the holy week of Easter.
Rev Dave Bonny, Superintendent Minister of the Newark and Southwell Methodists spoke of the lesson which could be learned from Jesus’ sacrifice in the Easter story.
It was a message of particular relevance in today’s uncertain and at time unstable world, to “choose love over conflict, anger and fear.”
