Reader’s letter: Climate action must be a priority for everyone

Newark is a beautiful town, in a beautiful location. Visitors and residents alike come here to enjoy its history and cultural scene.

However, we cannot avoid the fact that we live in a world where global influences affect our daily lives in our towns and villages.

We do need to deal with the effects of climate change — like flooding — immediately. But we also need to plan for the future and if possible make changes that will make that future better.

This applies to local issues and global problems.

I believe we should prioritise the environment in our decision making. Both as individuals and as local leaders and councillors.

Green spaces and wildlife don’t just look nice, they are essential for mental and physical health.

They also, of course, play a huge part in reducing the effects of climate change — including flooding.

I am saddened that the council executive has chosen to roll back on its prioritisation for climate action.

This seems to echo the national party priorities of helping big business and paying lip service to short-term projects around climate action.

Unfortunately, politics all too easily gets in the way of the needs of the people and the planet.

I hope residents of Newark and district will make their voices heard by writing to the council and their MP to ask for direct action to save our planet and our town and rivers from the effects of climate change.

And to make a clear statement at the upcoming elections that they want change and a better environment. — Matthew Spoors, Newark and Sherwood district councillor.
