Friends of Newark Castle and Garden holding special open day for visitors to go inside and climb Newark Castle this weekend, April 27

This weekend visitors to Newark Castle will have the rare chance to climb the historic landmark during a special open day.

On Saturday (April 27), from 10am to 2pm, Friends of Newark Castle and Gardens will be opening up the over 900-year-old castle for people to explore for free.

There will also be the opportunity to climb the 97 steps to the top of the tower and gatehouse, offering fantastic views of Newark’s town centre and the River Trent, as well as getting a close-up look at the building.

The beautiful Victorian gardens within the castle grounds will be open as usual for all to enjoy.

While entry is free, donations are welcomed to Friends of Newark Castle and Gardens as the group work hard to uncover new facts and insights into the iconic town landmark.

They also actively promote and raise money to enhance and preserve the site and new members are always welcome — for more information, go to: www.newarkcastlefriends.co.uk/

Rowan Cozens, portfolio holder for heritage and culture at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for history lovers to climb this historic building and get unique views of our beautiful town.

“It’s not often that the public is allowed to explore the castle tower and gatehouse, so this is the perfect opportunity for those who’ve always wanted to do it.

“Friends of Newark Castle and Gardens will also be on hand during the day and will be able to give you a helpful insight into the history of the castle.”

Several other activities are taking place in Newark on Saturday including a paddle board race along the River Trent, a small business showcase in the Buttermarket and the unusal sight of a 18-metre-long inflatable whale in the Market Place.

“It's great to see so much happening in the town on that day,” said Rowan.

“I hope those who visit the castle, will also take some time to visit the other amazing activities taking place across the town.”
