Advertiser reader’s letter: Close dangerous crossing points
I read with interest what was said by Highways about the proposed closures to all those dangerous crossing points on the A1.
I use the A1 every day to get to and from work.
Since I live near Caythorpe, to get up to Newark I have to drive to Marston and go southbound to the Downtown junction B1174 and go around the roundabout coming back on myself to drive northbound to Newark.
But the northbound turn-off exit across the carriageway at Marston is insanely dangerous.
Those trying to get off the A1 northbound at Marston have to use a filter lane and then turn right off the road across the southbound carriageway and I’ve seen so many near-misses — not to mention when the filter lane gets full at rush-hour and people are queuing all the way back to the fast lane.
It is the same at the crossing exit points at Dry Doddington and Claypole.
It’s a dangerously short filter lane and you see too many people run out of patience and take a chance crossing the southbound carriageway and nearly cause an accident.
I’m all for closing those exits, it’s just too dangerous trying to cross such a fast road with motorists travelling in excess of 80 or 90mph.
Yes, it may cause a bit of an inconvenience for people who have to travel further along the A1 to get off the exit they need, but it’s better to be slightly late than never make it at all. — E. YATES, via email
