Newark Town Council adopts new logo for branding and marketing

A council has adopted a new logo as it attempts to modernise its online presence.

In November, Newark Town Council agreed to commission a new website and as part of this process reviewed its existing logo to determine whether it could be modernised to fit the new style website as well as being versatile enough to be used across social media platforms, in print, on promotional materials and banners around Newark.

Two potential new logo options were produced as part of the process.

Option one is similar to the current traditional design but has been refreshed with line work and brighter colours.

Option two offered a different and contemporary design with the town's crest placed upon an inverted shield, said the represent the windows and walkways around Newark's historic market place.

Newark Town Council's Finance and general purposes committee met to discuss the options.

The new logo comes at no additional cost to the council as it is covered by the costs of the new website which were approved at an earlier date.

Councillor Lisa Geary said: "I strongly dislike option two. I have a strong preference for option one and that may be because it is so similar to what we have right now and I don't see anything wrong with it.

"The shield is upside down, I don't really know what it's meant to signify and it doesn't do anything for it."

Councillor Max Cope said: "I agree with Lisa, I don't like option two. I just don't like it, it's not nice.

"Option one in my humble opinion is more traditional and we are a town council, we are not trying to be a flashy, graphic organisation. That to me is fine and it does what it says on the tin.

"I'm pleased to hear the comments about the cost. Can I just suggest that we start using it on a when needed basis, stationary, website, email. In terms of things that are already printed such as business cards, let's use those up first and then bring the new brand into play."

"I'm quite happy for option one to be used, but for banners that are fairly new such as those on Newark Royal Market they don't need replacing just yet."

Councillor Johno Lee said: "I too was concerned about the costs associated with this after one of our neighbouring parishes spent £35,000 on two signs. That's not something I wanted this council to do.

"I just want to confirm that there will be no significant cost to this council for replacing any signs because signs are expensive.

"I think our signs are fine as they are and if they need replacing then that is done on an as and when basis."

Councillors were reassured over concerns about costs by the town clerk who confirmed that the logo would come at no additional cost.

Members agreed to adopt the first design as the preferred option for the new town council logo.
