Nottinghamshire couple name first baby after Newark pub, Oscar’s Inn, where they had their first date

A couple have chosen to name their new-born baby after the pub where they shared their first date.

Amy and Daniel Swanston first met at Oscar's Inn in Newark five years ago and have since gone on to marry, build a life and bring 16-week-old Oscar into the world.

The couple, who have since moved to Tuxford, continue to hold a special place in their heart for the pub where it all started, but naming their first child after the venue wasn't always the plan.

"It started out as a bit of joke, but realised we actually really liked the name," said Daniel.

"We were laying in bed one night having a laugh and joked that if we had a boy it would either be Oscar after Oscar's Inn or Rupert after The Prince Rupert, where we had our second date."

"It's quite a special place really.

"We'd come in here quite a few times, we'd bring the dog, we'd bring family, we would order food from here during lockdown and it was the first place we visited after covid restrictions were lifted.

"I think the slogan 'a country pub in the heart of town' is incredibly accurate, there's nowhere else quite like it."

As a memento of their first date and to celebrate Oscar's birth, pub manager Thomas Jackson surprised the couple with an engraved wooden plaque.

He said: "We just thought it was great, it's such a nice feeling to hear someone has named their child after your place.

"We've had the pub for over ten years and it's a great story, so we just wanted to do something to say thanks — and he'll get a free pint on his 18th birthday too."
