‘Deplorable behaviour’ of shoplifting louts at Greggs in Newark Market Place causes anger

The ‘deplorable behaviour’ of young hooligans has been denounced following a brazen daytime theft from a town centre bakery.

A customer at Greggs in Newark Market Place alleged they witnessed a group of young people enter the bakery and steal several items for their lunch.

The incident was said to have occurred just before 1pm on Wednesday afternoon (June 21) and happened right infront of shop CCTV cameras.

The witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I was sat having my lunch, when three young lads came in and nicked some food.

“It happened at 12.45pm. They walked right up to the chilled cabinets, took out a few sandwiches and a soft drink and walked back out.

“There was a camera looking straight at them so there is security footage but the staff said they have problems on a regular basis.

“It seems to be the same three lads who have been causing problems for businesses around town and smashing windows.

“They are causing trouble for anybody and everybody.

“It’s pointless telling the police because they can’t do anything, but I would have thought a banning order would work and making the parents responsible.

“It is absolutely deporable. I was sat next to a couple from Lincoln who had come over for the day to do some shopping but said they wouldn’t been coming back to Newark again.”

Greggs staff have recently started to wear body-worn cameras as a response to rising levels of anti-social behaviour within the bakery and in the town centre.

Greggs has been approached for comment on the most recent incident.

Nottinghamshire Police previously told the Advertiser: “We are working hard as a neighbourhood policing team to tackle antisocial behaviour in Newark town centre as we absolutely accept this is an issue.

“Reducing anti-social behaviour remains one of our chosen neighbourhood policing priorities in Newark and Sherwood because we know the damage it can cause to communities, and that’s precisely why we do so much work to combat this.

“Our officers carry out targeted patrols of areas where these offences are reported on a daily basis, while we work closely with local businesses and CCTV to capture evidence to allow us to take action, where we can.”

The public are asked to report any incidents of anti-social behaviour to the police on 101.
