Fire at derelict Lilley and Stone School in Newark prompts appeal from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service

Fire crews attended a fire at a derelict school which has prompted them to ask parents "do you know where your children are?"

On Sunday (March 6), teams from Newark and Bingham fire stations attended an incident at the derelict Lilley and Stone school in Newark.

A group of teenagers were subsequently evacuated from a smoke filled room within the school.

The site is a known hotspot for trespassing, as Newark Advertiser reported earlier this year, along with pictures showing the current state of the former school.

The latest incident prompted Newark fire station to make a statement on social media, saying: "Do you know where your children are?

"This school presents a series of hazardous conditions and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service are currently working with partner agencies in an attempt to get the premises secured to prevent further incidents.

"In the meantime, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service are sharing CCTV footage from the incident with the police in order that the group of children can be identified and their parents consulted to ensure their safety going forward.

"Please educate your children as to safe environments to hang out and let's not wait for a child to be seriously hurt before taking any action."
