Newark Advertiser reader letters: Follow example of the President

Readers may be aware that I am extremely skeptical about the idea of catastrophic climate change and its un-healthy offspring, Net Zero, and have asked myself when the West will wake up to reality.

Donald Trump has been inaugurated, and he is taking action to create that awakening as leader of the West.

Within hours, he had withdrawn America from the Paris Climate Accord because he believes that it was ‘a one-sided deal that hurts American industries while letting China pollute freely.’

He has also declared a national energy emergency and he says: “We will drill, baby, drill.” He has directed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to re-examine the legality and continuing applicability of the infamous 2009 Endangerment Finding for greenhouse gases issued during the Obama administration.

Donald Trump is now the President of the United States and his leadership will need courage to question orthodoxy, to challenge entrenched interests and to put the needs of his people first.

He knows his country has vast reserves of natural resources and understands that harnessing those assets is essential to their national security and economic growth.

At long last, the most powerful nation in the West has woken up to the primacy of reliable energy in generating prosperity, but I am sad to see that, in the UK, we are still involved in a reckless pursuit of Net Zero even though we, too, have great untapped natural resources.

High time to wake up and abandon the folly of Net Zero? — R. SHEPPARD, Beckingham.
