G H Porter Provisions in Newark town centre applies for alcohol license, to be decided by Newark and Sherwood District Council

Ahead of its reopening to the public, a historic town centre business is applying for an alcohol licence.

After being closed for the past year, G H Porter Provisions, on the corner of Newark Market Place, is set to reopen under new owner James Westwood, in partnership with Zest Brewery, this month.

The shop will reopen as a traditional butchers in keeping with its history, however, in order to diversify what is sold and increase business’ appeal, they plan to sell alcohol from Zest Brewery and other local suppliers.

An application for an alcohol license has now been submitted, which will be decided by Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Licencing Committee.

The application seeks to allow Porter’s to sell alcohol at the premises between the hours of 9am and 5.30pm, and up until 10pm for special events

Newark Town Council’s Planning Committee reviewed the application and offered no objection.

Praise was also given to the restoration work and painting that is currently taking place to tidy up the shop’s facade.

Neil Clarke said: “It is excellent to see that the building will be used again.”

Final preparations are now taking place to get the business ready to reopen while waiting for an official licencing outcome.

A final decision will be made by Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Licencing Committee.
