Newark Advertiser reader letters: Focusing on the positives of Newark

We rarely see positive things said about Newark, but I feel I have to say something in support of our wonderful town.

Too much emphasis is placed on the negatives in Newark, what with complaints about antisocial behaviour, warring councillors, and constant slanging matches and negative comments on social media, but let’s look at all the positives shall we?

We have such a lot of hard-working groups, councils, and charities who work so hard to put together so many brilliant events all year round - the Newark Half Marathon, Dragonboat Festival, Christmas markets, and Steampunk Festival to name but a few.

Speaking of events, Newark Festival was an absolute triumph. For our town to pull off something so well organised and suitable for all the family was fantastic. The music acts were very good, the event ran like clockwork, and the activities up at the castle were also excellent, as were the lovely fireworks to round off the night.

I’ve always enjoyed browsing the shops in town, and I think we have a good mix of independent businesses and larger chain stores to keep everyone happy.

I also genuinely feel that this is a lovely place to visit for tourists, with so much heritage and history to explore at the Sconce, the Castle, Air Museum, Civil War Centre, and of course the Workhouse over at Southwell.

So instead of moaning about our town, why don’t we just feel grateful for the lovely positives we do have here? I genuinely love Newark and feel very privileged to live here.
