Plans for Kings Marina, Newark, backed by Newark Town Council despite Environment Agency flood concern

Concerns have been raised over plans to create ten residential moorings at a Newark marina — over flood fears.

Aquavista Watersides & Marinas Ltd has applied for permission for change of use for ten leisure moorings to residential use at Kings Marina on Mather Road, Newark.

The Environment Agency has raised concerns over flooding.

However, the idea was kept afloat when the application was discussed by Newark Town Council's planning committee.

Members backed the plans who rejected the Environment Agency concerns, saying the risk would be minimal given that boats float.

They said: "No extra boats will be added and if the people that live there now are safe then changing the use of some existing moorings shouldn't be a problem."

The change of use does not require any physical alterations to the marina, beyond minor changes such as additional storage bins and re-allocation of existing parking spaces.

The re-allocation would see to site increase from 30 residential moorings to 40 and decrease the existing 98 leisure moorings to 88.

There are also five floating homes on site.

There were also concerns from Environmental Health around waste disposal on the site and if there was adequate provision for the ten additional residential moorings.

It was requested that the applicant provide the number, type and location of the waste storage and collection points.

One committee member said: "Basically they are asking for more information.

"But if you have one waste disposal site on a boat yard it will deal with ten toilets, 50 toilets, 100 toilets. I don't see a problem with this."

Newark and Sherwood District Council will make the final decision on the application.
