Marks and Spencer confirms 2021 return to Newark

Marks and Spencer has confirmed it will be opening a new 12,000sq ft food store at Merchant City Ltd’s Maltings Retail Park, Newark, in 2021.

The store will be designed to appeal to M&S’s target family-aged customer, with a wide product offering and a focus on fresh produce, including an in-house bakery.

As well as the new food offering, customers will also be able to use M&S’s click & collect service, enabling them to order clothing and home products with next day collection.

The Maltings Retail Park, off Northgate, will provide a new five-unit, 73,000 sq ft shopping destination in Newark.

The construction of the first two units, including the M&S unit, will commence in early 2020.

Zoe Gibbard, head of region for the East Midlands, said: “We’re excited to unveil our plans to open a new store in Newark.

"Customer shopping habits are changing, so it’s important we reflect the way they want to shop and seamlessly integrating our in-store and online experiences.

"Our new store will offer local families the best fresh and seasonal produce, alongside a fantastic offering from our in-store Bakery.

"We look forward to sharing more details as the launch approaches in 2021.”

Phil Rowe, development director at Merchant City Ltd, said: “We are delighted to have secured M&S as a high-quality anchor store for exciting new development.

"The commitment of M&S confirms that the Maltings Retail Park will be a leading retail destination in Newark, and we look forward to announcing other retailers in the near future."

M&S quit the Newark high street in April when it shut up shop on Stodman Street as part of a national programme of closures.
