Newark's newest café Domingo Caffè goes down a treat

A new Italian coffee shop has opened in Newark town centre, offering a range of small batch coffee roasts, cakes and gelato, writes Fionn Burrows.

The new Domingo Caffè on Middlegate opened last week to huge success according to chief executive James Tob-Ogu, who is incredibly happy with the support the business has received.

He said: "People love the coffee but it's not just been in-store, the response online has been incredible with all the reviews and Facebook messages."

The business — which has been roasting its coffee beans in Termoli, South of Italy, for more than 25 years — says all beans are ethically-sourced and only the best-quality bean crops are selected to make a perfect roast.

But what sets it apart from other coffee brands is innovative techniques where beans are roasted in small batches under strict temperature conditions for optimum flavour and aroma.

The Middlegate location was chosen after James described the town — which is twinned with Emmendingen, Germany — as having a friendly European flair to it.

It is the first franchise store of Domingo Caffè. The business has an existing warehouse in Waddington.

The café buys its beans directly from a multi-generation Italian family of roasters and hoped to open in the autumn of last year but was delayed due to covid.

Despite the initial success of the Newark store, James isn't done yet and plans to expand the café and offering in town — as well as open other stores in towns like Southwell, Lincoln, Grantham and Mansfield.

Domingo Caffè plans to combine its Italian heritage with the culture and community of the region by working with local bakers and producers to supply their cakes and products, as well as bringing dozens more jobs to the area.

Reviews on Domingo Caffè's Facebook page stated the coffee is outstanding, with the café well worth a visit.

Paul Page wrote: "Outstanding authentic Italian coffee and gelato, well worth a visit to this little bit of Italy in Newark."
