Newark Advertiser reader letter: Plant the seeds for our future now
Someone once said that a society grows great when people plant trees of which they will never know the shade.
Or something like that.
We need to address the problems of today. But we need to do that in a way that will not make more problems for tomorrow.
Let’s make no mistake — the seeds we plant now in our town and district will grow into those issues that our children and their children’s children will confront in years to come.
Our politicians — the ones who make the decisions — appear to be currently making short term decisions without thought to the longer term consequences for the people.
It makes me sad.
Everyone is making tough choices day in day out. But if the residents of this town and district are to be able to make effective decisions for the longer term, they need to have the right environment in which to think and decide.
That means the physical environment and the political one.
Green shoots will only grow in fertile ground.
Ground which I fear may not be cultivated by our current leaders.
Let’s work together to believe in a better future and make it happen. — Matthew Spoors, Newark and Sherwood Green Party.
