Newark Advertiser reader letter: Please, grow up and get on with the job
I have been giving this letter a lot of consideration, but as a responsible resident I feel it important to speak up.
I am a regular viewer of Newark and Sherwood District Council’s meetings. It’s not exactly exciting viewing, but I want to stay informed and would urge others to do the same.
At the start of March I witnessed what may have been the council’s most chaotic and ridiculous meeting ever.
The council was meant to be discussing it’s yearly budget and council tax setting.
There was a lot of debate, as is to be expected on such important issues, but what isn’t expected and shouldn’t be accepted is the way in which the meeting descended in a shouting match between members.
There was at least some sense in the room when Sylvia Michael said if she was watching from home, she would have been confused about what was happening.
I was confused. But I was also shocked to see such discourse by elected members.
Regular readers may remember my letter about councillors using social media as a platform to attack each other, which distracts from their work and does nothing but lower faith in the council further.
I pray these councillors screw their heads back on straight, ignore personal squabbles or agendas, and get back to focusing on the real issues .
They need to remember that we elected them, and if they do nothing but fight pointlessly then we can so easily vote them out too.
So please, grow up and get on with the job. — A. Moore, Newark
