POLL: Do you think a decision on the Lilley and Stone site needs to be made soon?
It seems the debate over the future of Lilley and Stone is still up in the air.
With the site in a derelict state and seeing regular break-ins from trespassers, trustees are keen to advocate for development. But a campaign group is hoping to safeguard the site for future community use.
This week the Advertiser gained exclusive access to the former school and revealed through photos the haunting and dilapidated nature of the listed building. It's classrooms still set up to take lessons, albeit surrounded by rubble, with wires hanging from the ceiling, and hole riddled hallway walls with class photos still hanging.
A group of like minded residents opposed to the idea of redeveloping the school site also recently officially formed the Lilley & Stone Site in Peril Community Organisation (LASSIPCO) and have started taking donations in order to expand and fund their campaign.
LASSIPCO meets regularly to discuss the proposed redevelopment plans which would see housing built on land currently used, in part, by a number of community groups and sports clubs.
A petition set up by the group to gauge public opinion has already gained roughly 600 signatures, demonstrating the strength of feeling from the community.
So with opposing views from groups within the community, it seems no final decision is on the horizon.
