New mobile coffee business, Kings of the Road Coffee, launched in Newark

A kind-hearted entrepreneur was inspired by an encounter with a man in distress to make a dramatic career change — and is now ready to begin his new journey.

Kings of the Road Coffee is a new mobile coffee business launching this Saturday (February 1) for the first time, which will pop up at events and locations across the district.

It’s the first stage of plans dreamed up by Newark’s Adam King — who spent years working his way up to become a supervising tradesman before feeling like he needed a new challenge — with the ultimate aim of a creating a ‘positive social space’ in the town, inspired by an emotional episode in which he talked someone down from a bridge.

“I wanted something new, something I know I’ll enjoy and I am really passionate about coffee,” he said about the new venture launching this weekend.

“A few years ago I never would have pushed myself as hard as I do now, I was always negative and it’s easy to think about how you can fail.

“The coffee industry has really taken me by surprise and I feel like I have learnt so much already.

“It’s a learning curve, but when you start something new in life, you can only get better — anything is possible, it’s just all about developing that mindset.”

The idea for the mobile business came about while chatting with other parents at one of his son’s motor-cross races, who wished they could enjoy a really good cup of coffee while they waited.

Within weeks, and supported by his wife Sophie, Adam had put together a business plan and mapped everything out.

He spent months taste testing coffee from different single origins and mixed blends, before settling on a unique blend which will exclusively be available through Kings of the Road.

Now, he will be able to serve barista level coffee from the back of his new customised van, which will be popping up at events, schools, football matches, sports clubs and more.

One day Adam hopes to put down roots and open up a coffee shop in Newark and create a positive social space welcome to all, inspired by a recent experience.

“I always wanted to give something back and I see this as a way of doing that,” he said

“It’s about more that just coffee. I want to bring people together and give them a place to go where they can sit, talk and share their experiences without judgement.

“While I was out on the road, I had an encounter that left a lasting impact on me.

“I came across a young man in distress on a bridge, instead of driving by I stopped and chatted to him for a while before bringing him to safety.

“It makes you realise that some people just need to be heard, and that experience has really inspired me to want to create a lasting space where young people can feel safe, heard, and supported.”

The coffee shop plans are still in the early stages, but with Adam’s positive mindset driving the launch of the new mobile coffee van it is only a matter of time before even more of his ideas become a reality.
