2024 British National Ploughing Championships coming to the Thoresby Estate, near Ollerton, Nottinghamshire on October 12 and 13

The best ploughers in the land will clash in a battle of traditional farm skills, promising a fun day out in the countryside.

Over 250 competitors have been sharpening their skills in ploughing matches up and down the country in preparation for the 2024 British National Ploughing Championships, which takes place at the Thoresby Estate, near Ollerton, next weekend (October 12 and 13).

It will be just the third time in the premier ploughing competition’s 73 years history that it has been held in Nottinghamshire, and to celebrate a country festival will run alongside.

Chief executive of The Society of Ploughmen, who organise the event, Sue Frith said: “Whatever your age, there is something here that will be of interest to everyone.

“It’s an amazing event which has such a lovely atmosphere, bringing people together from both urban and rural communities.

“We are delighted to be back in Nottinghamshire and are hoping the weather will stay fine for us but if it doesn’t just bring your boots, or buy some while you’re there.”

The event will give rural enthusiasts and novices alike a chance to appreciate hundreds of years of Britain’s farming heritage all working together in one place.

Visitors can enjoy the sites of hard-working heavy horses, all the way through to steam ploughing engines, vintage tractors, and modern day equipment.

There will be equipment and animal displays as well as trade stands, shopping stalls and a craft marquee, with everything from a pair of tyres to a pair of socks for sale.

For a little bit of added fun, tractors and trailer rides will help visitors to get around the vast 230 acre site.

Across the two days fifteen ploughing classes will be held, with ‘world style’ ploughing, classic and vintage ploughs trying to win a place in one of the ‘Plough-Off Finals’.

The Supreme Championship trophy will be awarded on the second day with some of the champions seeking a place to represent their country in the 2025 World or European Ploughing Championships.

The international events are traditionally held in a different country each year, with the European Championships set to be hosted by England in the spring, also in Nottinghamshire.
