Newark and Sherwood District Council prosecute and fine fly-tippers
Two people have been prosecuted by a council in relation to fly-tipping.
Newark and Sherwood District Council has successfully prosecuted two offenders after both failed to attend formal interviews under caution to assist with enquiries into fly-tipped waste.
In their absence, the offenders, Kaylea Callaghan and Shane Smith are both ordered to pay a £400 fine, £34 victim surcharge, and £400 costs.
Fly-tipping is an illegal offence. If someone is suspected to be involved in an incident and fails to assist with investigations, they may be prosecuted under the Environment Act 1995.
The council state that they respond to all fly-tipping reports and aim to clear the rubbish within 24 hours — provided it is on a street or public place.

It is an individual's responsibility to know what has happened to their waste waste as if it is dumped illegally, they could be fined up to £50,000 and/or receive a prison sentence.
An an unlimited fine can be issued as Crown Court and up to five years in prison.
