Sainsbury's Balderton worker retires after 16 years of service

A store’s longest serving employee is retiring after 16 years of service.

Terry Hammant, 76, joined the Sainsbury’s Balderton team when the store first opened after retiring from the Post Office.

“I was only meant to stay for a year or two while I get used to retirement, but that was 16 years ago now,” he said.

“It kept me going, kept me active and I’d do it all again if I could but because of my health I’ve finally had to retire, I would have gone until 80 if I could.

“I enjoyed working with my colleagues enormously. They really became close friends and I built up a relationship with probably a few hundred customers. Some would even travel to shop on my days of working so we could have a little chat while I served them.

“When I would go on holiday they’d panic and ask where I was to make sure I hadn’t died or something.

“My very regular friends are disappointed to see me going but I’m in there every day to get my paper, a drink and have a chat anyway.

Terry was a key worker throughout the covid pandemic ensuring the public were still able to buy food and supplies.

He was also sent by company to enjoy the 2012 Paralympic games in London and even helped stop a few shoplifters in his time.

Terry had previously worked as a high-end jeweller in Kensington, a dustman in Newark and a postman in Balderton.

“A good worker is someone that ensures that all those that come in feel welcome,” he said. “All customers had to leave with a smile.

“I’ve seen managers come and go but all my colleagues are so brilliant, everybody helps each other and it’s an experience I have never had anywhere else.

“But your body tells you when it’s time to pack up and I’m afraid this is about the time.

“It was just like having a second home to me and I’m going to miss it so much.”
