Newark and District Round Table celebrates 75 years

A town institution, which raises thousands for charity every year, has celebrated its 75th anniversary.

Throughout 2024, Newark and District Round Table has been marking seven and a half decades of bringing people together and doing good in the community, after it was first established in 1949.

The group’s motto of “Do More” is reflected in the work that they do for charitable causes, but also by giving men aged 18 to 45 an opportunity to make new friends and try new things in a welcoming environment.

Current chairman, Mathew Skinner, who said: “I’m incredibly proud that we have reached this milestone.

“We are about reinforcing fellowship and community, while giving back — we do some serious good, but have a lot of fun too.”

In October, over 100 people attended a Gala Dinner in Newark Town Hall’s grand ballroom, to celebrate the Round Table’s past and present.

The Round Table does a lot for charity, most visibly at Christmas time when they tour the neighbourhoods of Newark in their Santa sleigh and collect money for a range of good causes.

Throughout the year they also support others or organise events of their own, including the Newark Duck Race, Pudsey Bear school visits for Children in Need, and take part in the Newark Dragon Boat Race for the Children’s Bereavement Centre and Beaumond House.

With meetings every fortnight, the group is a place where men can come together and make friends, as well trying things they might normally not get a chance to do such as, paddle boarding or getting into the cockpit of a flight simulator — Mathew described it as being like a “man crèche”.

He added: “It was an absolute honour to be made chairman.

“I get to wear a chain with all the names of past chairmen on it, and I am incredibly grateful that my name is now written alongside those of some absolute legends from Newark’s past.”

“When I first joined it was during Covid and there were only a handful of members left, so to see us grow and have a really good mix of people now is lovely to see.

“We will continue to celebrate what we are all about while moving forwards and keeping our traditions alive.”

The Round Table are also keen to attract new members and anyone interested in joining is asked to get in touch at: chairman@newarkroundtable.co.uk
