Plans submitted to Newark and Sherwood District Council by LNER to restore grade-two listed Newark Northgate Railway Station
Plans have been submitted to refurbish a historic railway building, which is more than 170-years-old.
In an application by LNER, which operates Newark Northgate Station, the main grade-two listed station building will undergo a number of repair and replacement works to ensure that it’s character is maintained and to avoid future deterioration.
Opening in 1852, the station is a key link on the King’s Cross to Edinburgh mainline and serves many intercity connections across the Midlands. It became a listed building in the early 1990s.
Although there are a number of modern shelters and waiting buildings on platforms, the original Victorian buildings are brick-built with decorative iron brackets and Georgian style arch windows.
The applicant states that the proposed works would help to improve the building but maintain these historic features.
This includes the replacement of existing plastic and metal gutters, with larger capacity black cast aluminium guttering in order to increase capacity and avoid overflowing into the building during heavy downpours.
Chimney brick work would also be re-pointed with lime-mortar and roof vents vents would be installed on the platform side roof to improve breathability and reduce condensation in the building.
The existing felted flat roof covering will be replaced with a more durable liquid plastic covering, timber canopy slats will be replaced to be more in keeping with the building’s original character, and existing 1960s lighting will be replaced with LEDs to improve energy efficiency.
Additional general repair work includes the re-painting of structural steel supports in red to match the existing colour scheme, the repair of loose and broken roof tiles and re-glazing of any broken glass panes, like-for-like.
Newark Town Council’s planning committee raised no objection to the proposals, however, Newark and Sherwood District Council will have the final say on the approval of plans.
