Advertiser reader’s letter: The end for the precinct?
Published: 05:00, 29 March 2025
A couple of Saturdays ago I was walking through town and I was surprised how busy it was.
The market, Stodman Street, Middlegate, Cartergate and Bridge Street were all bustling.
Then I walked through St Mark’s and it was like a ghost town — almost deserted.
It’s been like that since Wilkos closed and it’s hard to see that changing unless a new anchor store moves in.
Trouble is, Newark already has all the stores so who would want a space like that?
Maybe the time has come to put St Mark’s out of its misery — at least the Lombard Street side.
Knock it down, replace it with something more leisure based.
What would Newark people like to see in a space like that? — PAUL DUDDLES, Balderton.
