In her latest column Sherwood Forest MP Michelle Welsh writes about connecting in the community at Christmas

As Christmas draws near, Sherwood Forest is looking more magical than ever, writes Sherwood Forest MP Michelle Welsh.

Twinkling lights adorn our high streets and festive wreaths decorate doorways. It’s a time for celebration, reflection, and coming together as a community.

Christmas has always been a time for connection, and nowhere is that more evident than here in Sherwood Forest. Whether it’s through volunteer work, helping out a friend, or simply sharing a smile and a kind word with a neighbour, these small gestures of goodwill remind us of what makes our community so special.

This year, as we enjoy the festive season, I want to encourage everyone to think about how we can continue to support one another, especially our local businesses. Our small shops, cafes, and markets are the lifeblood of our towns and villages. They are run by our neighbours, families, and friends - people who work tirelessly to bring us unique Christmas gifts and a warm and friendly service.

Shopping local not only keeps the festive spirit alive in our high street, villages and town centres but also strengthens our local businesses. Every purchase we make helps sustain jobs and build a stronger, more resilient community.

So, whether it’s picking up a handmade gift from a craft stall, enjoying a meal at a local pub, or choosing a real Christmas tree from one of our nearby garden centres, let’s show our gratitude and support for those who make Sherwood Forest a wonderful place to be all year round.

This Christmas holds special meaning for me as it’s my first as your Member of Parliament.

From the festive markets and school plays to the dedicated volunteers organising Christmas light switch-ons for residents, it’s been heartwarming to see how much effort goes into making this time of year special for everyone.

Of course, the festive period isn’t always an easy time for everyone. Many in our community face challenges that make the season difficult. If you’re able to, why not reach out to someone who may be spending Christmas alone? If you or someone you know struggles with this time of year, we have some fantastic support groups local to Sherwood Forest, including

In Sam’s Name, a peer support group for men suffering with mental health issues, and the Newark and Sherwood Autism Support Group for parents, grandparents and carers of children on the autism spectrum, whether diagnosed or undiagnosed.

As your Member of Parliament, I feel incredibly privileged to represent such a vibrant and supportive area. I’m inspired every day by the resilience, creativity, and kindness of the people of Sherwood Forest. If you need any support, please do get in touch with my office at michelle.welsh.mp@parliament.uk.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas.
