Tributes to be paid to victims of Newark’s Ransome and Marles factory bombing by Luftwaffe during second world war, during ceremon this Friday, March 7
A ceremony to remember Newark’s darkest day of the second world war will be held this week.
On March 7, 1941, 29 men and 12 women died, and 165 that were injured during a bombing at the Ransome and Marles ball bearings factory, on Northern Road, Newark.
The Luftwaffe dropped 10 bombs on the factory, with 5 exploding, and caused the town’s largest loss of life during the whole war.
The tragedy became known as ‘Newark’s Black Friday’ and many of the victims are buried in Newark Cemetery where a tribute ceremony is held every year.
This Friday, residents and family members will gather to remember the dead at Newark Cemetery’s Sacrifice Memorial Cross at 1.30pm.
A full list of the names of those who died will be read out during the ceremony and a minute of silence will be observed.
