Artist Susan Isaac, contestant on Sky Arts’ Landscape Artist of the Year, opens new exhibition of her work at Gallery 6, Stodman Street, Newark
A new exhibition by an artist currently starring in a hit TV show competition has opened in Newark today.
Gallery 6, on Stodman Street, is playing host to a new exhibition by artist Susan Isaac, which runs until March 22.
Some may recognise Susan as one of the talented painters to have appeared on Sky Arts’ Landscape Artist of the Year, and has progressed through to the semi-finals of series 11, due to air on March 5, at 8pm.
She has previously appeared on the show on two separate occasions. Once as a wildcard entry, and secondly after being selected as a main contestant.
With a background in architectural illustration, her exhibition features a range of landscapes and urban scenes, as well as portraits.
The Upton-based artist also paints scenes from around Newark and Sherwood, with views of iconic locations such as Southwell Minster and Newark Castle among those on display.
She works primarily in oils but also experiments with mixed media to add to texture.
“I’ve always painted. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t,” said Susan.
“I might usually spend a few weeks working on some pieces usually, so it was really different to adapt to the time limits on the show [Landscape Artist of the Year].
“It takes practice — I really worked hard to find my own bit of magic.”
After starting a family, Susan found herself leaning into and enjoying her painting more, and later enrolled on a refresher course at Newark College.
Gallery 6 owner, Melanie Anderson, said: “It is wonderful to have Susan’s art on display here, and when we heard she was looking to exhibit, it was an opportunity we couldn’t miss.
“We wanted to shine a spotlight on someone who is so good and local to us, and open up her work to an audience which has an awful lot of interest after seeing the show.”
Anyone interested in chatting with Susan will have the opportunity to do so during a ‘meet the artist’ event on March 8, from 12pm to 3pm.
Gallery 6 is open Wednesday to Saturday, from 10.30am to 4pm each day.
