Newark Southern Link Road project public meeting organised by Urban and Civic at YMCA Newark and Sherwood

People will have the chance to learn more about a long-awaited £100m road and meet with those behind the project at an event this week.

Developers, Urban and Civic will be hosting an information and engagement event with project and delivery partners for the £100m Southern Link Road project planned to join the A46 at Farndon with the A1 at Balderton.

The project will see the creation of a new four-mile long road south of Newark, with a roundabout at each end.

Described as strategically important for the town, the road will form a key part of Newark’s economic growth — with the aim of improving connectivity, reducing congestion, unlocking land for housing and creating employment.

The engagement event will be held at the YMCA Community and Activity Village on Lord Hawke Way, Newark on Thursday (September 28) across two open public sessions, from 11.30am to 1.30pm and from 5pm to 7.30pm.

All Newark residents are welcome to attend and learn more about the new project, including construction plans and their impact as well as how the road will benefit the town long term.

The majority of the road is scheduled for completion in March 2025 with the connection to the new A46 roundabout by December 2025.

Urban and Civic are responsible for delivering the road as part of their Middlebeck development and upon completion will allow a further 2,600 homes to be built.

Project contractors, Breheny Civil Engineering and ECL Civil Engineering will be in attendance at the public event to answer any questions.

Skanska will attend on behalf of National Highways to provide updates on plans to dual the A46, as well as the Urban and Civic team, representatives from Nottinghamshire County Council and Newark and Sherwood District Council who have both contributed to the project, and Oxford Archaeology, who have been responsible for all archaeological excavations prior to work starting.

Kyle Smith, communities and partnerships at Urban and Civic, said: “This event is one of many ways we are keeping local people well informed about the road and its construction.

“It is a significant project for Middlebeck and Newark, and one which we know is of interest to many, who will benefit once it is completed.

“We would encourage people to come and meet us at the event and also look for us on social media so they can keep abreast of news and updates on our journey.”

Middlebeck is a 694-acre urban extension on the southern edge of Newark which is currently home to almost 500 families. When complete the neighbourhood will be home to a community of 3,150 homes.
