What do people in Newark think should be councils priorities when spending council tax money?
With a rise in council tax all around, including Newark and Sherwood District Council, Nottinghamshire County Council, and Newark Town Council, we heard what people think their tax money should be spent on.
Opinions ranged across town, but the majority of people pointed out that the roads in and around Newark are a ‘disgrace’ and that should be a priority.
“They should invest in the roads because they are in such a state and have been for quite a while,” said James Wright.
Tracey Lewis agreed that the roads and potholes should be a key investment but that improving the town as a whole should also be on the council’s list.
“I feel like they could invest in the variety of events in the town, bring more free activities and shows for the people, especially family-friendly,” Hannah Woods added.
At the end of January, Newark Town Council agreed to raise its share of tax by 5%, while the district council has agreed to raise its council tax by 1.94%.
Stephanie Baker and her daughter Katie Baker agreed that the town could do with more clothes and toy shops.
Steve Howarth, who doesn’t live in Newark but comes to the town centre often said: “The bus services should be improved, there should be better schedules.”
Continuing the road improvement trend, Steve Smithson said: “I would like to see the roads improved as well as the litter situation.”
Tracey Lewis also agreed that the roads and potholes should be a key investment but that improving the town as a whole should also be on the council’s list.
