Ahead of Record Store Day UK the Advertiser heard what songs, albums and artists bring back people’s memories

In its weekly voxpop, the Newark Advertiser heard what songs, albums, or artists bring back memories for the residents of Newark.

Ahead of Record Store Day this Saturday (April 12), we wanted to hear more about the music that echoes in the hearts and minds of people across Newark.

From Diana Ross, The Beatles and Slayer to The Clash and Elvis, if one couldn’t think of an album or a specific song, there was always an artist ready to take them back in time.

Karen Langley said: “Anything from Diana Ross but the song Three Degrees.

“When we were courting I used to be a telephonist on the switchboard and my now husband, every time that song came on his radio, he used to ring me and I would answer it and all I would hear was the song Three Degrees and then he would put the phone down.

“That is a good memory for me.”

Sue and Martin Edgar, both lovers of the band Slayer, said that listening to the band ‘just puts a smile on your face’ and that it reminds them of being young and ‘enjoying yourself’.

Record Store Day started in 2008 and the biannual event celebrates the culture of independently owned record stores.

Newark itself has a popular independently owned record store — Vinyl Attraction, which is currently located in Kirkgate, Newark.

“‘London Calling’ by The Clash reminds me of being a student in London,” said Lisa Darnell, “I just related to everything they said and how unhappy they were but I was so excited to be there so in a funny way it is an ironic memory but a funny one.”

Lynn Mallender said: “The song Legends of Today by Oh Wonder, the very first time I heard them was on a drama – Unforgotten – and they did the background music.

“It is just fantastic music, it is not loud and I have got the album on my mobile and it is just one of those that you can sail along to.”

Barbara Page chose ‘December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)’ by The Four Seasons, and said it reminded her of being back at university as they used to sing and dance to it when going out.

She added: “It wasn’t in 1963 that I went to university but the song was always re-released.”

Alice Jones, a Kate Bush fan, said that the song Wuthering Heights brings back memories of being a teenager, despite not being her era.

Steve Towne said: “Al Greene reminds me of being young and enjoying life, especially the song Tired of Being Alone.”

Lisa Thomas, a member of the Steampunk Society said: “There are a lot of Steampunk songs that bring memories back to me, especially back to Newark and the good times.”

“I used to listen to quite a lot of Elvis, it brings very close memories to me,” added Ray Hall.
