Advertiser reader’s letter: Where has tax from new housing gone?
The question you raise re council tax (readers’ vox pop: what should council tax spending priorities be) prompts another question which I cannot seem to find an answer to.
That is, in Newark we have massive new housing popping up. Every new property pays new money to our council to the tune of what must be millions of pounds per annum.
The idea that this new money serves the needs of the new addresses doesn’t really wash, so why are we seeing increases in council tax with all this new money dropping into the council’s coffers?
There is no observable improvement to existing services that I can tell.
The condition of our roads are the worst that they have ever been.
We are seeing what looks like criminal misuse of taxpayers money in America and there are examples where our money is mis-prioritised by our hopeless government.
There could well be examples of this at local level too.
So why are we not seeing a reduction of council tax given all this new money is now being collected? — RICHARD TYSZKA, via email
