Review: Shrek the Musical at Theatre Royal, Nottingham
Ogres have layers, and apparently vocal range too, in this fun family genre twist which unexpectedly works.
After taking the world by storm in the early 2000s, the aloof but lovable character of Shrek is now raising the roof at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal in Shrek the Musical.
For anyone like me who grew up with and loved the original film, it’s understandable to be a little apprehensive about seeing the prospect of a large, green, swamp dwelling ogre with a Scottish accent singing and dancing with a colourful cast of fairytale creatures brought to life.
That is why it came across as such a shock when not only does the concept work on stage, but it was wildly entertaining.
For the uninitiated, the show follows the tale of the titular character of Shrek who is happy in his isolated swamp, but when his peace is suddenly disrupted he is forced to head out into a world which hates him just for the way he looks.
In a bid to restore him solitary way of life he embarks on a quest to rescue the fiery Princess Fiona from a dragon guarded castle at the request of the pompous and incredibly camp Lord Farquaad, who channels his inner Kenneth Williams.
Along the way Shrek reluctantly befriends a talking donkey who proves the perfect comedic foil to Shrek’s gruff nature and the audience is treated to a range of catchy songs and dance numbers sure to get even the most sceptical smiling.
“Ogres are like onions, they have layers” is one of the shows most memorable quotes and throughout we come to discover just how true this is.
Slowly but surely this sarcastic, unpleasant, big green monster shows his soft side, let’s down his walls and shows that deep inside he’s looking for friendships and love.
Special recognition must go to the production with stunning costumes, make up and puppetry as well as the creative set design, which was a blend of physical props and projected backdrops which could change mid scene.
With an almost pantomime type feel to it, this is a very enjoyable show with a lot of heart and a message that what makes people beautiful is on the inside.
Overall, this was a very enjoyable time which is sure to be a big hit with youngsters and grown ups who are young at heart.
Shrek the Musical is playing at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal until this Saturday, March 24.
