Knights Templar display to open in Newark Castle

A new Knights Templar display will be officially opened at Newark Castle on Sunday.

The exhibition looks at the history and story of the medieval Knights Templar, some of whom were imprisoned at Newark in the early 1300s.

Evidence of their stay remains in Templar graffiti scattered across the castle.

The exhibition has been researched and designed by Wayne Crawford, of Newark, who works at the University of Nottingham.

It has been paid for by public donations to the Friends Of Newark Castle group.

The official opening, by Friends Of Newark Castle chairman Mr Allan Towler, is at 2pm.

The exhibition will then be open for 30 minutes before the start of a concert by Ibstock Brick Band. It will also be open during the 20-minute interval.

After that, the exhibition can be seen as part of the towers and undercroft tours.

The friends group has bought new armour, swords and shields — painted by Helen Wroe — as well as Knights Templar dressing up costumes to use alongside the exhibition.
