Fosseway Flyer bus service between Newark and Nottingham to be withdrawn by Marshalls of Sutton on Trent
A bus service linking town and city has failed to bounce back after the pandemic, and will cease operation next month.
The 90 and 90A Fosseway Flyer, run by Marshalls of Sutton on Trent for nearly 15 years, will be withdrawn by the company after services on Saturday, April 15.
The route links Newark and Nottingham via Balderton, Fernwood and Farndon with 14 buses in each direction daily.
In an announcement on Facebook, Marshalls said: "Since taking over the route in 2008 we are proud of the service we have provided, however it has become increasingly apparent since the pandemic that we cannot continue to sustain the route on a commercial basis and following attempts to revive the service we have taken the difficult decision to withdraw from the route."
Kenneth Tagg, operations manager at Marshalls, explained the service had been supported with funding throughout the pandemic, but had failed to become commercially viable again.
He added: "The government funded the service during the pandemic, but the funding is coming to an end.
"The county council has supported it too, but the pot of money is finite and will also come to an end."
Before the pandemic, the service had no outside support and was run commercially but has not recovered sufficiently to continue operating as such.
"We have always regarded the Fosseway Flyer as a flagship service but at the end of the day as a business we have to make money," Kenneth added.
"The service is currently only just covering costs with the funding. It was a difficult decision, but at the same time not difficult."
In an announcement on Facebook, Marshalls thanked it's regular passengers and advised service users to avoid buying any tickets that will not be expired or fully used before the service is halted.
