Gardens open to the public in Halam, Southwell, Hawton and Nottingham in support of National Garden Scheme




Four Nottinghamshire gardens are to open their gates to the public as part of the National Garden Scheme this weekend.

The gardens will be open for visits while raising money for charity, including Perennial, Horatio’s Garden and the Army Benevolent Fund.

On Saturday (May 24), The Old Vicarage on Halam Hill, Halam will be open from 1pm to 4.30pm.

The organic hillside garden has matured over 28 years into and it offers a newly designed area at the bottom of the garden.

The wildlife pond attracts diverse wildlife to complement the planting.

There is some wheelchair access, it is dog friendly, and includes parking

It will also have plants and refreshments for sale.

On Sunday (May 25), the Brook Cottage on 41 Church Street, Southwell, is joining the scheme as a new garden from 1pm to 5pm.

The atypical cottage garden is a walking distance of Southwell Minster and its front offers a view of climbing roses, wisteria and clematis.

The rear and side garden, which are hidden by a clothed arbour and birch trees, will surprise visitors with wildflower meadow/perennial planting to give autumn colour.

Plants are mostly propagated by the owner.

There is some wheelchair access, and it accepts card payments.

There will be plants for sale and refreshments.

The Poplars, on Cotham Lane, Hawton, will also be open on Sunday from 2pm to 5pm, which follows an extensive remodelling and replanting by the current owners.

People will get to explore a number of distinct areas including a white themed formal garden, Mediterranean-style gravel patio and contemporary cottage garden.

A choir is planned for May featuring the Collingham Singers, which will provide a relaxing environment for visitors to enjoy the garden.

It will have plants for sale and refreshments.

Also on Sunday, the Mapperly Garden, on 147 Kenrick Road, Nottingham, will see five gardens open for the first time, showcasing achievable ideas and projects for the average amateur gardener with a small plot.

From 10am until 4pm, the garden owners will be on hand to discuss how they have developed their garden, and a range of home-made cakes will be available in support of the National Garden Scheme.

Additional parking is available at Mapperley Day nursery on Westdale Lane.

There will be plants for sale, refreshments, and it accepts card payments.
