Public get hands-on with archaeological finds from Urban and Civic’s Middlebeck development, Newark, at community history event at All Saints’ Church in Hawton
Members of the community were able to get hands with archaeological items at a recent special event.
Organised by Urban and Civic, the Middlebeck Community Archaeology Event, was held at All Saints’ Church in Hawton.
More than 150 people turned up to inspect some of the exciting discoveries found on the Middlebeck housing development site, some of which date back thousands of years.
Artefacts on display at the event included pieces of pottery and personal items ranging from the late Upper Paleolithic period — between 50,000 and 12,000 years ago — to the Roman period.
Visitors were able to learn about the history of the area, which is believed to have been inhabited as far back as 12,000 years ago.
Children also enjoyed archaeology activities, where they were able to excavate their own finds.
An Urban and Civic spokesman said: “Our archaeology event was hugely positive — more than 150 people attended and we had some great feedback.
“We’re hugely grateful to all the parties involved who helped bring to life some of the discoveries that have been made at Middlebeck, and it’s been great to involve the community and showcase some of the rich history behind this site.”
