Update, 7.20am: The carriageway reopened a few minutes ago following police investigations and vehicle recovery at the scene.
A section of the A1 several miles long has been closed tonight (Thursday) following a serious crash on the northbound carriageway.
The carriageway is expected to remain closed until at least 6am tomorrow.
Lincolnshire Police said the two-car crash happened between Barrowby and Foston, adding that the A1 carriageway is closed between the two villages.
However a National Highways traffic alert suggests the closure stretches to Fernwood, near Newark.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area.
A diversion has been put in place. According to National Highways the diversion route is:
- Leave the A1 northbound at Barrowby at turn left onto the A52 heading west.
- Follow the A52 to the roundabout with the A46 at Saxondale and take the 4th exit onto the A46 northbound.
- Continue on the A46 northbound to Newark on Trent and the roundabout with the A1 and rejoin the A1 northbound to continue your journey.
