Newark Town Council propose newt-related street name for new development on Barnby Road — due to area’s large amphibian population
Councillors have sought to pay homage to an area’s amphibian population in it’s street name suggestion for a new development.
Newark Town Council has been asked to suggest a street name for the 10-house development at Grove Bungalow, Barnby Road.
The area has a “regionally significant common toad population”, as noted in planning documents for the development, as well as populations of other common amphibians.
A nearby housing development has been named Knot Gardens — due to knot being the collective noun for toads.
As chairman of the planning committee, Lisa Geary had made the first suggestion to the developers of the Grove Bungalow site through delegated authority, and had proposed Newt Gardens.
This name was rejected by the developers, and the town council has been asked for further suggestions — which was discussed at a planning meeting on May 28.
Lynn Roulstone proposed the name Armada Gardens, with Armada being the collective noun for newts and considered a “less obvious” connection to the animal.
Lisa Geary described it as a “great idea”, and the idea was supported by other committee members who commented on the work done to support newts in the area.
The name suggestion will be put forward for the developer’s consideration.
